Rolls-Royce Cullinan: The Most Luxurious Off-Road Vehicle in the World
Updated: Oct 14, 2019
“We are not in the car business, we’re in the lifestyle business,” Rolls Royce representatives will say.
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, that is. For a cool $325,000, you can bring home the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the new SUV in the brand’s lineup.
Strong Sales for Rolls-Royce
With more than 4,000 vehicles delivered to customers around the world, 2018 was the strongest sales year for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in its entire 115-year history. On top of that, the company received more requests for custom cars than ever before.
So what's the deal? The purchase of a Rolls Royce is an investment of time and money; one does not simple waltz into a Rolls Royce dealership and drive it away. The brand takes service very seriously, and they ensure that every detail is right for you. With that in mind, it might sound a trifle stuffy and staid. However, the company is branching out to reach a more hip market with the new SUV in the lineup, the Cullinan, along with its Black Badge offering.
The Black Badge option, which trades out shiny chrome for a sleek, stealthy black chrome, is aimed squarely to a younger demographic. The wheel hubs and spokes are made up of 44 fine layers of folded black carbon fiber, and carbon fiber also replaces the wood on the interior.
A Rolls... OFF ROAD?
Luxury and off-road aren't typical bedfellows, but Rolls Royce threw down the gauntlet for a new way of thinking on that topic and created the Cullinan SUV. For those interested in a refined ride that can also tackle mud and off-roading capably, the Cullinan fits the bill.
We drove a Cullinan courtesy of Park Place Dealerships, and we were impressed by the SUVs tank-style sturdy frame, the retractable hood ornament, massaging driver's seat, champagne chiller, coach doors, and more. Stepping inside feels like being Cinderella for a moment, and giving it back is like reaching midnight and turning into a pumpkin.
Home Run at First Bat
Smooth, with incredible power and heft, the Cullinan is no throwaway SUV. This beast has a twin-turbo 6.7-liter V-12 engine scoring out 563 hp, but it's incredibly quiet in the cabin. While this is the brand's first foray into making an SUV, designers clearly did their research and added touches no other vehicle offers, like leather-wrapped seats and a picnic table that pops out of the tailgate. And all-wheel drive.
This is serious all-wheel drive, not an afterthought. In fact, it's so robust that two women are taking it out on a 1200-mile off-road competition called the Rebelle Rally, and it's rough and ready. Read more about their plan of attack here.
We were so starstruck that we didn't find much we didn't like about the Cullinan in the short time we drove it. And even if we did, we'd have to say "Shhhhhhhhh" to ourselves. Because any negative talk would mar the perfect feel of driving it.
